Finding one’s way in a constantly changing social context, characterised by opportunities but also by risks arising from the globalisation processes, has become an increasingly difficult task. International research has long highlighted that educational transitions are crucial in determining social inequalities. However, the forms of orientation that are currently practiced in educational institutions prove to be ineffective in contrasting the reproduction of social disparity. This article is the introduction to the special issue of The Lab’s Quarterly, which collects essays dedicated to life chances in the age of the New/Net/Knowledge Economy. The following contributions provide food for thought and operational proposals aimed at promoting equalising actions.
