Voluntary work, a fundamental and essential component for the correct reintegration of detainees into society, has a widespread presence in prisons of Italy and France, even though it has different religious, ideological, and cultural roots. This research shows the two pivotal roles of voluntary work: the active and promoting dimension, evidence of civic commitment and solidarity through the discreet presence in everyday life; the political dimension, as a social entity that participates in removing the obstacles that generate disadvantages, exclusion, degradation, and loss of social cohesion. Not without criticisms and contentious issues, voluntary work is however a force and a resource, in the prison and post-prison environment, essential to facilitate the rehabilitation of prisoners, albeit with different operating modes.
