Abstract

Using an anthropological approach to communication, this article examines the processes that lead an island community to a quest for symbols that carry an aesthetic conception of authenticity in order to foster union and belief. Several brands of ready-to-wear clothing are used. Their products are studied as communication supports revealing an interpretative framework of reality.
